Busia man’s attempt to stone magistrate flops

BUSIA, Kenya, Sep 15 – Business was brought to a standstill at the Busia law court on Thursday when a suspect who had been arraigned in court for the mention of his robbery with violence case tried to hit the presiding magistrate with a stone.

John Wabwire Opesa is already serving a 14-year jail term but had been brought to court to answer charges in connection with a seperate robbery violence case.

He appeared before Busia resident magistrate Evans Keago who had earlier handed him the current jail term.

However, a hawk-eyed court orderly who was guarding the suspect blocked the stone from hitting the magistrate who was unaware of what was happening as he was perusing the accused’s court file.

The court orderly was injured by the impact of the stone that hit his hand eventually hitting a wall.

Sources at the law court indicated that the suspect was annoyed at the way the magistrate had handled his original case that saw him being committed to 14 years in jail and vowed not to allow the magistrate to handle his case for fear that he would hand him a stiffer jail term.

The accused was taken back to Kakamega where his case will be heard by another magistrate.
