NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 19 – Narc-Kenya has given Makadara MP Gidion Mbuvi alias Sonko and his Juja counterpart William Kabogo seven days to show cause why they should not be kicked out of the party.
In the letter signed by party Secretary General Danson Mungatana that is copied to House Speaker Kenneth Marende and the Registrar of Political Parties, the two are accused of campaigning against the party’s Kamukunji candidate Brian Weke in the just concluded by-election.
Mr Mungatana claimed that Sonko and Mr Kabogo influenced voters to vote in favour of PNU’s Yusuf Hassan by distributing goodies to them on the eve of the exercise.
“On Tuesday (August 16) you were in the company of PNU members campaigning for their candidate knowing too well that Narc-Kenya party on whose ticket you were elected to Parliament had fielded a candidate for the same seat,” reads the letter in part.
The party further accuses the two legislators of contravening the principles and values of Narc-Kenya as well as joining political alliances that had not been sanctioned by the party.
“You have made public pronouncements that are not in keeping with the Vision, Mission and Core values of Narc Kenya Party hence sending wrong signals to the party’s fraternity,” Mr Mungatana said in the letter.
“We wish to remind you that while in attendance of a meeting in Machakos County you implored that the Akamba people support their own son in 2012. This does not embrace our vision,” the letter continues.
Last month, party leader Martha Karua announced that the two were no longer members of Narc-Kenya. But in a quick rejoinder Sonko dared the flower party to kick him out saying he would form an outfit called the Unga Revolution Party.
Sonko said he would use the Unga Revolution Party to pursue his presidential ambition and advocate for the rights of Kenyans to access basic commodities.
He has also rubbished the party’s reasons for expelling him saying its chairperson, Martha Karua, also breached its principles when she campaigned for Ikolomani MP Bonny Khalwale during a recent by election.
“If they (Narc-Kenya) refuse to accept me then I will go to my Unga Revolution Party to pursue my ambitions. My slogan will be unga and I will give unga (flour) to needy Kenyans during my campaigns,” he had said at the time.
“She (Ms Karua) can only take such action against us if she first effects the same action against herself,” he quipped.
The Makadara legislator however said that he would like to stay on as a member of Narc-Kenya as he respected its members. He also said that there was need for political parties to include public participation when picking their flag bearers.
“I would like to say that I respect Ms Karua; she’s beautiful and she deserves respect. I would like to continue working with her,” he said.
Section 17 (4) of the Political Parties Act states a person who forms, joins, or advocates for the formation of another political party while belonging to another party, will be deemed as having resigned from his party.
Section 17 (7) also states, that a member of a political party may be expelled if he or she violates the party’s Constitution.
