Uhuru enthroned as Central candidate

NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 5 – More than 20 Members of Parliament from Central Kenya on Friday enthroned Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta as the regions’ flag bearer for 2012 General Election.

The MPs said that they had endorsed Mr Kenyatta as the regional leader saying that they would push their agenda through an alliance, which they would form with other likeminded leaders, to ensure victory in next year’s polls.

In a statement read by Runyenjes MP Cecily Mbarire after the day-long meeting held at the Cooperative Management College in Karen, the legislators pledged to ensure that the Constitution was wholly implemented saying they would soon unveil a political vehicle through which to pursue their interests.

“Our eyes are on success; our train has set off and is on its way to other regions. We will ensure that we tap friendships that will build into a national rhythm. Let unity ring from every village, ridge and region. This is the song; this is our way,” she said.

However other regional leaders like Narc-Kenya’s Martha Karua (Gichugu) and Peter Kenneth (Gatanga) have already declared their interests for the presidency maintaining that they will not drop their ambitions in favour of anyone.

Ms Karua and Mr Kenneth argue that Kenyans should be allowed to select their leaders through democratic processes.

Mr Kenyatta has already hit out at the leaders accusing them of dividing the Central Kenya vote. He argues that it would be easier to negotiate for the region’s interests if the community members were united rather than if they are divided.

The Finance Minister was not at the meeting which was also attended by Cabinet Ministers George Saitoti and Njeru Githae alongside assistant ministers Mwangi Kiunjuri, Ferdinand Waititu, Nderitu Mureithi and Lee Kinyanjui.

Others were Central Kenya caucus Chairman Ephraim Maina (Mathira), MPs Jamleck Kamau (Kigumo), John Mututho (Naivasha), Joseph Kiuna (Molo), Clement Wambugu (Mathioya), Peter Mwathi (Limuru) and David Njuguna (Lari) among others.

Although the MPs declined to answer questions from journalists, Ms Mbarire added that the group would hold inclusive consultations with other leaders so as to strengthen their alliance.

“And we shall work together with other leaders in the country. We will support our leader as he engages with other political leaders of our community and other communities as well in order to build a formidable political alliance that will guarantee a landslide victory in the forthcoming elections,” she said.

The leaders also promised to promote the region’s cultural heritage as well as address the economic and social challenges of their electorate.

Meanwhile Public Works Assistant Minister Kiunjuri was involved in an accident after leaving the meeting. The crash, between his Mercedes Benz and a Toyota Prado occurred at the Langata South and Bogani Road junction but the minister was not injured.

Police were immediately called to the scene where the vehicles were towed off.
