Embakasi hospital named Mama Lucy Kibaki

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 15 – Embakasi District Hospital has been renamed Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital.

Medical Services Minister Anyang’ Nyong’o announced the change in a Gazette Notice dated June 20.

The hospital becomes the first public institution to be named after a member of the First Family.

The trend was famous during Jomo Kenyatta’s and Daniel Moi’s regimes where schools, hospitals and stadia were named after them.

The government is also currently working on bank notes and coins to remove the portraits of Presidents Jomo Kenyatta, Daniel Moi and Mwai Kibaki.

The Treasury is complying with the provisions of the new constitution which does not allow an individual’s portrait in the notes and coins.

Article 231 (4) of the new Constitution provides that: “Notes and coins issued by the Central Bank of Kenya may bear images that depict or symbolise Kenya or an aspect of Kenya but shall not bear the portrait of any individual.”

The 120-bed capacity new district hospital constructed in Kayole, Eastlands area was through funding from the Chinese government.

It cost an estimated Sh427million to construct while another Sh117million would be used to purchase medical equipment.

“For about 25 years there has been very little investment in terms of infrastructure and capital development for health facilities in this country at the Sub-district, district and referral level,” Medical Services Minister Anyang’ Nyong’o had said last year when the deal was reached.

The Kenyan government would be fully charged with providing human resource at the hospital which is scheduled for commissioning in August.

The Ministry aimed to build three district hospitals in Nairobi to ease congestion at the Kenyatta National Hospital. The other two hospitals would be constructed in Dagoretti and Pumwani.
