Killer lioness slain in Nyahururu

NYAHURURU, Kenya, July 23- Game rangers attached at the Laikipia Natures Conservancy gunned down a lioness rampaging through a residential neighbourhood.

The lioness was killed barely a week after it mauled a middle aged woman at Matwiku area in Ol-Moran Division.

The beast was spotted marauding around the conservancy and it was believed that it intended to stray to the nearby farms before it was killed.

It had been reported that the deceased had gone to collect milk from her neighbour’s home when she was attacked.

Police said only a skull was recovered in the bush at it was removed to Nyahururu District hospital mortuary awaiting burial

Laikipia Senior Game Warden Aggrey Maumo confirmed to Capital News the death of the woman and said Kenya Wildlife Service was in touch with the family of the deceased on modalities of compensation.

Currently, anyone killed by a wild animal gets compensation of Sh200,000 while an injured person is given a payment Sh80,000.

He noted that this was the first incident where a lion had attacked a human and urged the local communities to keep away from areas infested by the wild animals.

According to the Founder and Director of the conservancy Kuki Galmann, the hunt for the killer animal has been going on for a week.

She said the animal must have been in agony owing to the fact that one of its front canine had been broken and the gum swollen and hence could not hunt normally.
