Woman drugs, circumcises girl aged 17

NAIROBI, Kenya, May 11 – Police in Nairobi have arrested a woman who allegedly drugged a 17-year-old girl and circumcised her as she lay unconscious.

The woman aged 32 was arrested on Tuesday night, a few hours after allegedly committing the shocking act in Ongata Rongai, according to police.

"This is a shameful act, it is not acceptable. The woman who drugged the young girl and conducted this shameful act has been arrested and is in custody," Nairobi Provincial Police chief Antony Kibuchi told Capital News on Wednesday.

He said the teenager was taken to hospital for treatment.

"Our officers are still interrogating her and she will be arraigned in court as soon as the officers are through with the investigations," he said and revealed that "the woman will face assault related charges."

Female Genital Mutilation is widely practiced in Kenya mainly amongst the Maasai and Kisii communities among others.

Lately, non-governmental human rights organisations advocating for the rights of women have been vocal on the need to curb the vice.

Despite numerous efforts by the organisations to conduct civic education, FGM is still widely practiced in Kisii and parts of the Maasai community.

In communities where it is practised, it is considered a rite of passage for girls.
