NAIROBI, Kenya, May 16 – A fresh twist has emerged on the late marathoner Samuel Wanjiru\’s love life, after a 25-year-old woman in Nakuru came out to claim that she was his second wife.
Judy Wambui who says she is five months pregnant with the athlete\’s baby told journalists on Monday that Wanjiru passed by her home at White House area on the Nakuru-Nyahururu road at about 8pm on Sunday night.
He passed by her house on his way from Eldoret, where he was undergoing training.
"He was supposed to be at the training camp for a month without taking a break but he told me that he was needed in Nyahururu urgently," she said.
Amid periodical tearful breakdowns, Ms Wambui narrated how Wanjiru, who seemed happy and settled had promised to return and spend the night with her after solving "the pressing issues at his Nyahururu home."
"He was here for about an hour and I could not escort him to the car because it was drizzling. He stood on the verandah and told me… let me go, we will talk when I come back," she said.
"He also told me not to switch off my phone as he would call when he was almost here."
She said the athlete did not divulge details about the emergency but promised to give her details when he returned.
"I was still waiting for him when his cousin called me at 3am to inform me about the death. I was shocked. He was happy as usual, there were no indications of depression," said a tearful Ms Wambui.
The former receptionist at a local hotel said they had been together with the 2009 Beijing Olympics marathon champion for five years since she finished her O-Level education at Laikipia High School.
She said Wanjiru had big plans for her unborn child.
"He told me to resign from work two years ago and promised to establish a business for me after I deliver. Our child was to be delivered at an expensive hospital and all plans had been put in place," she added.
"We had visited an insurance company to start a premium for our unborn child and we were given an appointment. It is unfortunate that he has gone before the arrival of a child that he promised to love unconditionally," she lamented.
Ms Wambui said that Wanjiru visited her parents last December and agreed on how he was going to pay dowry.
The woman who is due in September said they had plans to wed at the District Commissioner\’s office in December after visiting Wanjiru\’s parents.
"He had also promised to buy me a home and move me out of this rented house before the arrival of our baby," she added.
She described Wanjiru as a caring and loving husband who was humble and loving to all the people he met.
"He treated my friends as his own only a while after their initial meeting them. I have lost an invaluable partner," said Ms Wambui.
