MP charged with conspiracy to murder

NAIROBI, Kenya May 19 – Gatundu North Member of Parliament Clement Waibara was arraigned in Nyeri court on Thursday charged with conspiring to commit murder.

Mr Waibara who appeared before Nyeri Chief Magistrate Stella Muketi was charged that on diverse dates between April 1, 2010 and March 31, 2011 in Thika District, jointly with others not before court, they conspired to kill Bernard Chege Mburu.

The legislator however, denied the charges and was released on a cash bail of Sh30,000.

Mr Waibara\’s pleaded through his lawyer Gichimu Muhoho to have the case transferred to Thika which is his hometown was rejected after Ms Muketi said that her court did not have powers to transfer the case but said that the defence was at liberty to take any appropriate steps.

She ordered the prosecution to provide the defence with copies of the charge sheet, witness statements, documentary exhibits and any other relevant material to be relied upon by the prosecution.

The prosecution has lined up three witnesses who will testify in the case, including the victim.

The hearing was set for June 6 and the mention on June 2.

Before appearing in court, Mr Waibara was interrogated for hours at the Central Provincial Criminal Investigations office in Nyeri.

Police Spokesman Erick Kiraithe told Capital News that Mr Waibara was picked up from a hotel in Thika on Wednesday night before he was driven to Nyeri to plead to the charge.
