Man commits suicide at Kenyan church

NAIROBI, Kenya, May 21 – A man on Saturday morning hanged himself within the precincts of the Holy Family Basilica in Nairobi.

According to the Priest in Charge Father Simon Peter, the man believed to be between 30 and 40 years old was found hanging in the store of the church at around 8am in the morning.

"Our workers were washing the church and replacing the flowers as usual, they found the door to the store closed and asked the Priest who was there to open, they found the body of the man hanging," he said.

However he did not know why the man hanged himself.

"I didn\’t know what was in his mind, but he looked unkempt, his shoes were torn, his shirt was torn and his hands were dirty."

It was unclear if the incident was related to claims by a group of Christian fundamentalists that the world will end on Saturday at 6pm.

Father Peter said no one knows the time of his or her death.

"For us Catholics that is not an issue. It is in the bible, Jesus said about the end of the world, nobody, not even the angels know when the end of the world will come," he said.

The Christian fundamentalists believe May 21 at 6pm will  mark the end of the world.

Under the leadership of Preacher Camping, followers of his faith believe the second coming of Christ is on Saturday evening.

They said true believers will be ready for judgement day as non believers lazed instead of getting ready for the end of the world.

Mr Camping predicted worldwide earthquakes, followed by a Rapture, "by the end of Saturday, the good Lord will destroy the world as we know it with a massive earthquake – one that will crack open tombs to let out the dead, and flatten the world\’s cities to rubble."

Following his announcement close to 2,000 billboards showing Saturday as the end of the world have been erected in the United States alone.

Kenya was not left out after a billboard was erected at the Globe Cinema Roundabout in Nairobi spreading the news of the end of the world early this year.

Since then, the message has spread to other parts of the country with the erection of more billboards.

His message has been widely criticised by many religious leaders including the public itself.

The day however passed without incident in New Zealand and Australia well after 6pm local time.
