Kenyan cop kills boss, commits suicide

NAIROBI, Kenya, May 14 – A police constable went berserk on Saturday morning and shot dead his boss, injured a colleague before turning the gun on himself at Parklands Police station in Nairobi.

Witnesses said Constable Jacob Rop and Senior Sergeant Hassan Yusuf engaged in a heated argument as Mr Rop was returning his AK 47 rifle after night duty at about 7 am.

Constable Rop then reportedly aimed his rifle and fired at Sergeant Hassan in close range killing him instantly.

The constable also shot another police officer stationed at the report desk on the chest as he rushed to the scene to intervene.

The injured officer was rushed to the nearby MP Shah Hospital.

"One of the officers who was on duty was retiring a fire arm to the armory and for reasons under probe, he shot the officer in charge of the armory who died while undergoing treatment, he also shot another officer who was in the report office and who is hospitalized before he committed suicide,\’\’ said Nairobi Provincial Police Officer Anthony Kibuchi who rushed to the scene immediately after the incident.

He said they had launched an investigation into the killing of the senior sergeant who was in charge of the armory.

Mr Kibuchi said, "This is the second incident, the first was in Naromoru where an officer shot his senior, we are going to look into the incidents with a view to establishing the cause."

Dujis Member of Parliament Aden Duale who also rushed to the scene after the incident expressed concern over an increase in such incidents and called for urgent action.

He said: "The slain senior officer hails from my constituency, it is the second incident to happen in the police force in less than two months and as a country we need to ask ourselves why?" 

The body of the slain officer was immediately flown to Garissa for burial.

In March, a police officer ran amok and shot dead two of his seniors before he injured another one in Nanyuki.

The said officer shot dead the then Naromoru deputy station commander and a senior sergeant after being reprimanded for indiscipline and for reporting late to his work station.

The officer has since been charged with murder.
