KARA offices burgled, data stolen

NAIROBI, Kenya May 25 – Gangsters raided the Nairobi offices of the Kenya Alliance of Residents Association (KARA) and stole 20 computers containing valuable information, including alleged scandals at the energy sector.

KARA’s chief executive officer Stephen Mutoro told Capital News they also lost a laptop and other crucial documents that he claims contain vital information on a case the organisation planned to file in court this week over the rising cost of living.

“We have lost a lot of important information, including that of State parties which have failed to play their role to cushion Kenyans from the rising cost of living in the country,” Mr Mutoro said on telephone from Kilifi where he was attending an official function on Wednesday.

Mr Mutoro who is also the Secretary General of the Consumer Federation of Kenya said the organisation had also lost several office phones.

The burglary occurred at about 4am on Wednesday morning at the organisation’s headquarters located at Jamhuri Crescent, off Kabarnet Road.

“I have been told that it occurred when six armed thugs cut the fence and gained access to the compound where they blindfolded the watchman after a scuffle before they started ransacking all the offices,” he added.

Mr Mutoro said he suspects those behind the burglary were people either in the government or other sectors in the oil industry who have been blamed for failing to take proper measures to cushion Kenyans from the escalating fuel prices.

“We read malice in this robbery because it is public knowledge that we have been pushing for the reduction of the high fuel prices and corruption in the Energy sector, I have no doubt that key players are behind this,” he added.

Mr Mutoro told Capital News the federation was planning to hold a nationwide peaceful demonstration during the first week of June to press the government to save Kenyans the agony they are undergoing because of the high fuel prices.
