Interviews for CJ end, Deputy CJ next

NAIROBI, Kenya, May 9 – The Judicial Service Commission on Monday concluded interviews for the position of Chief Justice with the grilling of High Court judges Mary Ang\’awa and Mbogholi Msagha.

Justice Ang\’awa who appeared before the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) panel Monday on morning was questioned over her frequent transfers across the country during her career in the Judiciary that spans more than two decades.

Her personal traits were also put to test.

"They say that you are eccentric, temperamental; that you are high-handed in court, egoistic, a bully, rude and discourteous," JSC commissioner Emily Ominde posed.

She added that they had received complaints that Justice Ang\’awa was "uncooperative, unfriendly, uncompromising, vindictive and unreasonable."

In her defence Justice Ang\’awa said she was tough to ensure that the law was followed and she also could not be compromised in her judgements. She also said it would be unfair for the panel to focus on the negative comments about her.

"Those are negative accusations. It isn\’t fair to note that members of the public are talking about me (yet) there are members of the public that say I deliver," she said.

Justice Mbogholi Msagha who appeared on Monday afternoon pledged to reform the Judiciary if selected and ensure that it meets the constitutional requirements by overcoming the weaknesses blamed on the current Judiciary.

Others candidates who had appeared before the Commission were Court of Appeal Judges Alnashir Visram, Samuel Bosire, Riaga Omollo and Joseph Nyamu.
