Govt to pay contractors within 48 hours

NAIROBI, Kenya, May 27 – The government has assured contractors in the roads industry that their payments will be processed within 48 hours after they raise their invoices.

Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) Director General Eng Joseph Nkadayo made the revelation during the start of a tour of road projects in central province.

“The days of withholding payments for contractors are long gone as we seek to change the infrastructure industry, once a contractor raises a genuine certificate, payment will be wired to their account within 48 hours” Eng Nkadayo said while paying a courtesy call to the Kiambu Town Hall.

Infrastructure development has received renewed support from both the government and development partners such as the World Bank, African Development Bank and the European Union, which have pumped in billions of shillings towards public works in the country.

Most of the money in infrastructure development over the recent years has been channelled towards roads construction with up to Sh80 billion being allocated to the ministry of roads.

“Contracts will only be awarded when we are sure that we have money to pay, gone are the days when tenders were awarded knowing very well that there was no money to pay, leading contractors to abandon projects half-way,” Eng Nkadayo said.

KURA is currently undertaking road maintenance worth millions of shillings in Nairobi and other major urban areas across the country.

Eng Nkadayo also warned contractors against shoddy work, urging them to double their efforts by finishing projects in time and giving the tax payer value for their money.

Hi call came a few days after parliament passed the National Construction Authority Bill 2009. The body will be mandated to oversee the industry and enhance capacity building and standardisation of building materials.

It will also preside over the accreditation of contractors as well as register and accredit other players in the construction including skilled workers and supervisors.
