Civilians killed in Bujumbura attack

BUJUMBURA, May 30 – Dozens of armed men opened fire on a restaurant outside the Burundi capital Bujumbura, killing four people, witnesses and a local official said Sunday.

Local administration official Abdul Bampoye blamed the attack on "armed bandits" but witnesses said the attackers were part of a new rebel movement in the African country.

"They fired on a restaurant, killed four people and wounded three others, of which two are serious," Bampoye told AFP.

Several witnesses said the small bar-restaurant targeted in the attack is beside the local office of the ruling CNDD-FDD party, and was packed with party members who were watching the Champions League Final on television.

Residents told AFP the Saturday night attack was carried out by heavily armed men in military and police uniforms and lasted more than an hour.

The attack happened in the neighbouring Nkenga and Busoro areas, a few kilometres outside the capital.

A UN human rights expert voiced concern earlier this month over rising cases of extrajudicial killing in Burundi and the slow pace of investigating the crimes.
