Campaigns continue despite halted poll

Nairobi, Kenya, May 21 – Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka and Deputy Prime minister Uhuru Kenyatta on Saturday  afternoon held a campaign rally at the Kamukunji grounds drumming up support for PNU alliance candidate Yusuf Hassan despite cancellation of Monday\’s poll.

Mr Musyoka urged voters to be patient and turn up to vote for Mr Hassan after the court process is dealt with.

The Interim Independent Electoral Commission (IIEC) on Saturday afternoon confirmed that it had postponed the election following a court order.

Mr Musyoka said that the untimely postponement of the by-election by the courts was the work of their political rivals who were afraid of defeat come Monday and who also had the intention of splitting the voted base that PNU enjoys in Kamukunji.

"Even if some unscrupulous people have gone to court and temporarily stopped the election, I want all of you to remain steadfast in your support of our candidate and come out to vote when a later date is set," he said.

Mr Musyoka assured Kamukunji residents that their problems led by poor infrastructure would be given priority since Mr Hassan enjoyed the support the Minister for Finance.

"We know the difficulties the people of Kamukunji are faced with. We are privileged to have the man in charge of the Treasury here and he will look into them," he emphasised.

He urged Kamukunji constituents to continue being peaceful as they have been throughout the campaign period.

He said, "All over Africa people are rejecting leaders who fuel violence, let us also shun them and stay united. Let us shun leaders who aim to create divisions amongst us."

Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta commended the open and competitive nomination process through which Mr Hassan was chosen as PNU\’s candidate, saying that it was representative of the level of democracy in the party.

"We support Hassan because the process through which he was chosen is clean. He was chosen by the majority at Bomas and all parties in the PNU alliance support him." he affirmed.

He also cited Mr Hassan\’s international work experience as the main qualification that sets him apart from the rest of contenders.

"We support a man known for his work and his actions both locally and abroad. I believe he will work to unite the people of Kamukunji and will put the interests of the people before his own," he said.

Mr Kenyatta also urged constituent parties of the PNU alliance to stay united ahead of the 2012 general election.

"We know what cost us the general election in 2007, let us not again repeat the mistake by splitting our votes," he added.

Earlier Mr Kenyatta had led other leaders in meet-the-people tour from Muthurwa market, through the Machakos country bus and in Gikomba, greeting cheering residents and businesspeople, and buying their wares

Other Leaders who came to support Mr Hassan included Health Minister Beth Mugo Embakasi MP Ferdinand Waititu, ODM Kenya chief Whip Johnson Muthama and Juja MP William Kabogo.
