Bull fighter gores his way back to Parliament

IKOLOMANI, Kenya, May 23 – Dr Boni Khalwale, the bull fighter of Ikolomani, has proven his virility after he convincingly gored his opponents in the Monday by-election.

Dr Khalwale reclaimed his seat with 11,933 votes, more than 1,000 ahead of Benard Shinali of the Orange Democratic Movement who closed the finish line with 10,453 votes. Ford People candidate Collins Kizito tailed the race with 287 votes.

The New Ford Kenya candidate now gets a fresh mandate to represent Ikolomani after a High Court ruling floored him on February 18 when it nullified his 2007 election on account of massive irregularities.

Mr Shinali, who had filed the successful petition, then went ahead to assemble a powerful campaign machinery that was coordinated by his party luminaries – Leader Raila Odinga, Deputy Leader Musalia Mudavadi and Secretary General Anyang\’ Nyong\’o among others.

Dr Khalwale, on the other hand, got the silent support of the Party of National Unity which did not field a candidate for the race. Narc Kenya also supported his campaigns with Party Leader Martha Karua hitting the grounds to campaign for him.

The outspoken veterinary doctor had been one of the most vocal debaters in the 10th Parliament.

In February 2009 he engaged the then Agriculture Minister William Ruto in a heated debate over the maize scandal. Dr Khalwale had filed a Motion of Censure against Mr Ruto claiming the minister was at the centre of the scandal that nearly brought Prime Minister Raila Odinga\’s Orange Democratic Movement to its knees.

The MP was also behind a Motion that caused the ouster of Amos Kimunya from the Cabinet in 2008 over the sale of the Grand Regency Hotel when he was the Minister for Finance.  Mr Kimunya later made it back to the Cabinet in the Transport portfolio.

During the debate, Dr Khalwale is remembered for saying: "To stop corruption at the Treasury, Kimunya must go; to repossess the Grand Regency Hotel, Kimunya must go; to assure members of the public who were misdirected into buying Safaricom shares without adequate information, Kimunya must go!"

Dr Khalwale\’s latest attack was on Agriculture Minister Sally Kosgei where he bragged that he would teach her a lesson in real politics after she boycotted an event under her docket that was officiated by the PM.

Despite a setback, he is now playing again in Dr Kosgei’s political league in Parliament.
