Presidential vote underway in Nigeria

LAGOS, Apr 16 – Polling places opened on Saturday in Nigeria\’s landmark presidential elections as Africa\’s most populous nation bids to hold its cleanest polls for head of state in nearly two decades.

Polling stations in various areas of the country opened at the 0700 GMT start time, and even earlier in a few cases where large numbers of people waited in line outside, AFP correspondents reported.

The organisation of the poll is being watched closely. A first attempt at parliamentary polls on April 2 had to be called off when materials and personnel failed to arrive in a large number of areas.

Parliamentary polls were finally held last weekend.
