Former top cop murdered in Nairobi

NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 27 – A former Commandant of the Kenya Police Training College in Kiganjo, Bernard Kimeli, was on Wednesday found slain in his house in Nairobi\’s Westlands suburb.

The circumstances under which he was killed remained unclear, but police said his body was found in his house in Muguga Green estate with multiple stab wounds.

Senior police led by the Director of Criminal Investigations Muhoro Ndegwa visited the scene and announced that a probe was underway following the killing.

"We just received some report this morning that a person had been murdered within this Estate (Muguga Green). We came here and we have established that the person is a retired senior police officer," he stated. "Our staff have combed the scene but it is still too early to speculate as to exactly what transpired."

The late Kimeli, who is a former Deputy Commissioner of Police, served the force in various capacities and rose through the ranks to head the force\’s college in Kiganjo.

He retired in March 2008, after attaining the mandatory 55 years of age. The CID boss called on anyone with any information about the murder to assist the police.

"I am appealing to any Kenyan who may have any information to come forward so that they may help us with the investigations," he said.

"As of now, we need to avoid any speculation on the issue. From what we are gathering is that he slept early and left the son watching football. So the incident must have taken place between midnight and 4 am," he stated.

Fifteen police officers have been killed over the last nine months according to Internal Security Assistant Minister Orwa Ojode.
