NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 11 – As Kenya\’s post election violence cases get underway at The Hague, innocent Kenyans who were displaced in early 2008 continue to face various challenges as they try to piece their lives together.
Times have been especially trying for Nancy Moraa and her family who came to Nairobi after being forcefully ejected from their home in Langas, Eldoret in January, 2008. She now lives in Ole Kisasi area of Ong\’ata Rongai in the vicinity of the Nazarene University with her husband and three children.
Capital News visited her after being alerted by a well wisher about her plight. It is not an easy place to find; we were met at the gate of Ole Kasasi Primary which is near their house by her husband, Thomas Makori and eldest son Nahashon.
As the two got into the car to ride with us; all the young boy could talk about was his mother. "Mama analia, analia alafu anaomba (Mum cries and cries and then she prays)", he said.
We found Moraa lying on a chair, in their one roomed house writhing in pain. "Today she is especially bad," said Thomas. "I bought her some painkillers yesterday but they don\’t seem to have worked," lamented Thomas. Moraa has a debilitating tumour on her left right thigh which has virtually immobilised her.
Thomas says his wife\’s illness started in early 2007 after she slipped and fell. "Two months after her fall, the swelling had not subsided so I decided to take her to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret. The doctors said it was a muscle pull and they gave her painkillers and liniment to massage on the swelling but she never got better," he explained.
When they settled in Nairobi, Thomas took his wife to Kenyatta National Hospital. "She last went to the clinic at Kenyatta in September last year. I was meant to take her back in December but we didn\’t go. We were meant to return with Sh13,000 for an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) but we have not managed to get the money."
"Daktari alisema watanikata mguu, sasa niko tayari wanikate (the doctor said he will amputate my leg, I\’m ready to have it cut off)," Moraa interjected.
Thomas told us that his child, six-year-old Nahashon, has dropped out of school, while Edward who is four should have joined school by now but he hasn\’t. Andre, the youngest is only two-years-old but he too seems to realise that all is not well in the family. "She is only 28-years-old," lamented Thomas.
"I have a Diploma in Marketing," said Thomas; "If only I could find work, I would be able to fend for my family. My wife also needs medical help urgently before it is too late; she is only 28 years old."
