SYDNEY, Mar 10 – A former doctor who removed a patient\’s genitals without her consent was convicted by an Australian court on Thursday of maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm.
The doctor, who cannot be named because of a court order, told the New South Wales district court that he believed the operation conducted on Carolyn DeWaegeneire in August 2002 was necessary for medical reasons.
But DeWaegeneire, then a 58-year-old widow, told the jury she would never have consented to the operation in which a doctor removed her genitals, including her clitoris.
She said the doctor told her he was going to remove a lesion but never mentioned removing anything else.
The man will be sentenced at a later date.
