Fleeing gang shoots bystander dead

NAIROBI, Kenya March 31 – Gangsters shot and killed a man during a shootout with police officers who were pursuing them after a robbery in Nairobi\’s Eastleigh estate.

The incident occurred at about 2pm on a congested street after the gang grabbed an unknown amount of money from shopping malls.

"The gangsters were escaping when they were confronted by our officers and a shootout ensued. That is when the man was shot," a senior police officer said.

"There were three other people who were shot and seriously injured during the shootout," he added.

The gangsters who were armed with an AK 47 rifle are said to have been shooting indiscriminately at the crowd as they escaped.

"Police were challenging them to stop.  That is when they started shooting indiscriminately at the crowd to get their escape route.  In the process, one person was killed," the police officer said.

Nairobi Provincial Police chief Antony Kibuchi said a manhunt had been launched for gang that was said to have escaped towards Eastleigh section 3.

Police said they were yet to establish the exact amount of money that was stolen from the shopping malls.

Lately, there has been an upsurge of crime in Eastleigh and parts of Eastlands where at least three robberies are recorded every night.

Police were on Thursday trying to establish if the gang that shot and killed the man in Eastleigh was the same one that shot and killed a policeman on Luthuli Avenue at the weekend.

The policeman was also robbed of his AK 47 rifle which has not been recovered.

"We suspect it is the same gang from the description that has been given and the kind of arms they were carrying," another senior detective told Capital News on telephone.
