ADDIS ABABA, Mar 18 – The African Union\’s high-level panel on the Libyan unrest will meet in the Mauritanian capital Saturday to discuss north African country\’s crisis, it announced on Thursday.
The five-member heads of state committee will "determine the modalities of the implementation of its mandate. Following this meeting, the members of the committee will undertake to engage the Libyan parties and assess the situation in Libya," said the AU statement.
Saturday\’s meeting will be the committee\’s first since its composition was announced on March 12.
It comprises the leaders of several countries: Jacob Zuma of South Africa, Congo\’s Denis Sassou Nguesso, Amadou Toumani Toure of Mali, Yoweri Museveni of Uganda and Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz of Mauritania.
The panel is tasked to seek "the immediate cessation of all hostilities, the cooperation of the competent Libyan authorities to facilitate the timely delivery of humanitarian assistance to the needy populations," said the statement.
Other aims are "the protection of foreign nationals, including the African migrants living in Libya, and the adoption and implementation of the political reforms necessary for the elimination of the causes of the current crisis."
