NEMA awaits air pollutions regulations

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 28 – The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) is still waiting for the gazettement of new regulations that will address air pollution, two weeks after it directed Public Service Vehicles to fit litter bins.

NEMA\’s Deputy Director in charge of Environmental Awareness, Betty Nzioka said the air quality regulations will mainly target unroadworthy vehicles that had exhaust emission and industries that didn\’t control their discharge.

"It is an important tool that will assist NEMA to address issues of emissions and hopefully be able to provide a solution to mitigating the effects of climate change through minimising the emissions," Ms Nzioka said.

She said that there would be a six months period for awareness creation and sensitisation to give time to those affected to comply, if the new regulations were gazetted.

"So we have prepared what the Minister (John Michuki) requested of us to do and we are hopeful that within a very short time, we will see the gazettement," she said.

NEMA has so far gazetted seven regulations addressing various environmental issues.

United Nations Environment Programme Information Officer Angele Luh Sy challenged the media to push the environment agenda for sustainable development.

"When we talk about sustainable development, we are talking about economic prosperity, sound environmental management and social responsibility so of course in each of these areas, media has a very important role to play in terms of educating, influencing, exposing the crimes, motivating and mobilising people," she said.

They were speaking at the opening of an international workshop on Media and Sustainable Development in Africa.
