Explosions rock Tanzania army base

DAR ES SALAAM, Feb 17 – Several people were killed and wounded in explosions at an army base in the Tanzanian capital Dar es Salaam overnight, the state broadcaster announced Thursday.

Officials briefly closed nearby airports after the blasts, the report added.

The first explosion was heard at around 8:00 pm (1700 GMT) and stopped at dawn, said the television report.

Defence Minister Hussein Mwinyi told state television the army had been mobilised to handle the situation, while a brief army statement urged people to keep away from the scene as they investigated.

Neither the army nor Mwinyi gave a definitive death or injury toll.

In 2009, at least 25 poeple were killed and more than 100 wounded by a string of powerful blasts at an arms depot in Dar es Salaam, which officials said were accidental.
