BUJUMBURA, Feb 15 – A Burundian anti-graft group on Monday slammed "a new corruption scandal" within the country\’s police force, implicating the mayor of Bujumbura and a former head of state protocol.
The group, OLUCOME, said Bujumbura mayor Evrard Giswaswa, former presidential protocol head Moise Nzeyimana and a regional police chief David Nikiza set up a company, Burundi Car Services (BCS), implicated in siphoning off more than 500,000 dollars.
"It\’s a case of BCS supplying fictitious products," OLUCOME head Gabriel Rufyiri said. "The company was awarded its first contracts in January 2010 yet it was only registered in August 2010."
"Moreover, public office holders and senior army and police officers are forbidden by law from all commercial activities," Rufyiri added.
The group has already revealed a number of graft scandals, notably the illegal sale of a presidential jet in 2006.
The group\’s vice-president Ernest Manirumva was stabbed to death in April 2009.
Rufyiri has received death threats and has been imprisoned on several occasions.
