30 more charged for violating alcohol law

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 7 – Thirty more people were charged in a Nairobi court on Friday morning after they were arrested for drinking alcohol out-of-hours.

Those charged were arrested on Thursday at the Sabina Joy bar on Moi Avenue, according to the charges.

They appeared at the Makadara Law courts where they all pleaded guilty and were fined Sh30,000.  If they fail to pay the fines, they will serve six months in jail.

On Thursday, 25 others arrested in the same bar were charged and handed a similar sentence.

Nairobi Provincial Police Antony Kibuchi says officers in the city are under instructions to fully implement the law by ensuring that all bars operate within the stipulated hours.

On Thursday night, more than 200 suspects were arrested in various bars in downtown Nairobi and were expected to appear in court on Friday afternoon.

Section 34 a of the Alcoholic Drinks Act of 2010 now commonly referred to as Mututho rules says alcohol should only be consumed between 5 pm and 11 pm during weekdays and from 2 pm on weekends.

Anti-alcohol and drugs campaigners have welcomed the new rules, but bar owners and the country\’s all-important tourism sector have been highly critical.
