Home of bishop raided, guard killed

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 13 – A guard was killed and another seriously injured on Thursday morning when gangsters raided the residence of Catholic Bishop Philip Sulumeti in Kakamega.

Police said the raid occurred at about 4am when an unknown number of gangsters, armed with crude weapons, attempted to gain entry into the Bishop\’s home at Mukumu.

"They wanted to gain entry into the residence of the Bishop but were repulsed and that is when they attacked them," Western Provincial Police chief William Okelo said.

"One of the guards was killed and another sustained injuries," Mr Okelo added.

He said the wounded guard was admitted to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret.

Police said Bishop Sulumeti was not at home at the time of the raid but other workers who were at the home were not harmed.

Mr Okelo told Capital News an investigation and the search for the gangsters was ongoing but no suspect had been arrested.

"We are appealing to members of the public to share any information with us to facilitate an investigation. We hope to find the attackers because detectives are pursuing various clues," he added.

Bishop Sulumeti is the vice chairperson of the Kenya Episcopal Conference.
