Another traffic cop attacked

NYAHURURU, Kenya, Jan 24 – Yet another traffic police officer is nursing wounds after a motorist allegedly rained kicks and blows on him as he resisted arrest in Nyahururu on Monday morning.

The officer had stopped the taxi driver on the Nyahururu-Nyeri road, boarded it and ordered the motorists to drive the vehicle to the Nyahururu police station for inspection.

However, the driver defied the orders and drove past the police station at high speed towards Nakuru town but stopped at a nearby yard where the drama unfolded.

Here, he stormed out of the vehicle and descended on the police officer with kicks and blows.

Passersby were treated to a movie-like scene during the incident that took place at around 10:30 am as the lone officer made frantic efforts to block the vicious blows which sent him to the ground.

It took the intervention of prison warders escorting suspects to the nearby Nyahururu GK prison who stopped to rescue the officer, who seemed overpowered as he lay on the tarmac.

Nyandarua divisional police boss Jasper Ombati said that prison officers intervened swiftly and arrested the driver.

“Some members of the public called police on being suspicious of how the vehicle was being driven and as the prison officers followed they found the two wrestling as passersby watched in dismay,” said Mr Ombati.

He said that the traffic officer sustained injuries on his right leg while his uniform was torn. Mr Ombati said that the driver was locked up at Nyahururu police station waiting to be taken to court.

He said that he would face charges of assaulting the officer, resisting arrest from an officer on duty, careless driving and driving without a valid driving license.

He said no one had the right to attack an officer executing his duties and called on members of the public to observe caution. He said stern action will be taken against anyone found attacking a police officer on duty with an attempt to escape justice.

The incident comes after a similar attack on a traffic officer on the Nairobi-Thika highway involving a truck driver.  His case is already in court.
