Police vehicle blown up in Kenyan capital

KENYA, Nairobi Dec 3 – An Administration Police officer was killed and three others seriously wounded when their vehicle was blown up in a grenade attack in Nairobi on Friday morning

The attack occurred on a congested street in Eastleigh estate’s Section III at about 9 am, according to police and witnesses.

They said the scene that the attack occurred when a man hurled a grenade at the vehicle which was carrying four Administration Police officers.

“One of them sustained serious injuries and he died while undergoing treatment in hospital,” a police officer told Capital News soon after the incident.

“The other three are admitted to hospital… they are in a serious but stable condition,” he added.

AP Commandant Kinuthia Mbugua who later led a team of senior officers to the scene told journalists that the officer who died was attached to the Embakasi District Commissioner\’s office and was being dropped home when they were attacked.

“Investigations have already started but a casual look at the vehicle suggests that the explosion hit the passenger seat… that is where the impact was heaviest and that is where the officer who died was seated.  The impact to the driver’s seat was slightly lighter,” the AP boss said.

He added the driver who sustained injuries was undergoing treatment at the Nairobi Hospital: “We are confident and praying that the officer gets out of it,” Mr Mbugua said.

Mr Mbugua termed the incident a “terrorist attack” and warned residents to be wary of anyone who appeared suspicious.

“This is a clear indication that terrorism is real, globally and in our country,” he said.

“What the investigations will reveal is whether the explosive item was introduced into the vehicle or they had been in the vehicle because it blew the driver’s seat and the battery,” Mr Mbugua added.

A witness told Capital News that the grenade was thrown at the police vehicle by a pedestrian as it slowed down on a bumpy road and it exploded when one of the officers tried to check what it was.

“We ran away immediately we heard the explosion.  People were running in different directions,” the witness said. Another police source said:  “It did not explode immediately.  The grenade actually exploded when they were trying to check what had been thrown into the vehicle.”

The vehicle was towed away to the nearby AP camp.
