Kenya Olympian charged over death threat

NYAHURURU, Kenya, Dec 30 – World Olympic marathon champion Samuel Wanjiru has been arraigned in a Nyahururu court facing four counts of assault, attempting to kill his wife and the illegal possession of a firearm.

Wanjiru however denied the charges when he appeared before Nyahururu senior resident magistrate Alice Mong\’are.

He is accused of threatening to kills his wife Terezah Njeri Muturi and night watchman William Maside Muhunyi on December 29 at Nyahururu\’s Muthaiga Estate.

He is also accused of  assaulting the watchman and causing him serious bodily harm.

The athlete who was represented by a Nyahururu-based lawyer Wahome Ndegwa also denied being in possession of an AK-47 riffle serial number 02839 without a firearm certificate.

He was released on a Sh300,000 bond with a surety of similar amount until February 9 next year when the hearing of the case will commence. The matter will be mentioned on January 14 next year.

Prosecutor Chief Inspector John Rutto told that court that the accused went home at night while drunk when he committed the offences.

He said he confronted the wife and an exchange of words ensued prompting the night watchman to intervene.

It was alleged that it was at this time that Wanjiru went and pick the riffle and attempted to shoot his wife and the watchman before they were rescued by neighbours responding to their distress calls.

Police were called and immediately arrested the accused and locked him up at the Nyahururu police station before the charges were preferred against him.
