13 tonnes of drugs seized in Tijuana

Mexico, Nov 2 – The Mexican army said it had seized around 13 tonnes of marijuana in the northern border city of Tijuana, near where a record seizure of 134 tonnes took place two weeks ago.

The latest seizure came as the neighboring US state of California was poised for a controversial vote on legalizing marijuana for recreational use.

It also occurred in a house opposite a center where 13 recovering drug addicts died in a brutal massacre on October 24, an army spokesman said.

Officials have suggested the massacre could have been linked to the October 18 record seizure and that the powerful Sinaloa drug gang was involved.

Tijuana, opposite the US city of San Diego, has in recent weeks seen a resurgence in spectacular suspected drug violence.

More than 28,000 people have died in suspected drug attacks across Mexico since 2006, according to official figures, as violence has risen alongside a military crackdown on organized crime involving 50,000 troops.
