NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 10 – President Mwai Kibaki is on Thursday morning expected to chair a Cabinet meeting at State House Nairobi, ahead of a retreat in Diani that is slated for Friday and Saturday.
During the meeting, Cabinet Ministers are expected to come up with a programme for the two-day retreat. President Kibaki is expected to leave for the coastal town on Thursday afternoon for the Cabinet retreat.
The South Coast talks come as the government steps up its fight against corruption in the public sector, which has seen a number of Cabinet ministers in the spotlight over graft in their ministries.
The renewed fight has seen two Ministers, Permanent Secretaries, the Nairobi Mayor and other senior government officials lose their positions over alleged misappropriation of public money.
President Kibaki last month directed all ministries to clear pending corruption cases in their offices.
Prime Minister Raila Odinga who is also expected to address the retreat, has been asking ministers and their assistants to stop trading accusations over corruption allegations.
The latest spat involves Cabinet Minister Charity Ngilu and assistant minister Mwangi Kiunjuri who have been trading daily accusations over alleged corruption at the Ministry of Water.
The issue of resigning from office over corruption allegations is also likely to be on the agenda at the retreat that will be attended by ministers and assistant ministers.
The Implementation of the new Constitution which has also been a key discussion point in recent Cabinet meetings is expected to be addressed.
Parliament has already passed some important Bills to pave way for the creation of key implementation institutions.
The retreat also comes days after suspended Higher Education Minister William Ruto jetted back in the country after 30 hours of meeting International Criminal Court officials over the 2008 post election violence in Kenya.
