IIEC to conduct university poll

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 23 – The Interim Independent Electoral Commission (IIEC) has announced that it will conduct the Student Organisation of Nairobi University (SONU) elections in December.

Commissioner Winnie Guchu said on Tuesday that this followed a request from the university which had been conducting its own elections.

She said this would offer a training opportunity for the interim electoral body because there would be 14 different elections conducted on the same day.

“This means there will be 14 different ballot boxes,” Ms Guchu said.

“In the 2012 General Election we will be running elections for six positions so we are using this as a training to be able to see how we are going to prepare, the module and system we are going to use in the polling process to be efficient in delivering results and announce them on time,” she said.

The elections are scheduled to take place on December 10 and all candidates are required to pick their nomination papers beginning Wednesday through to November 28 at the Kenya Science campus which will be the tallying centre.

The poll is scheduled to take place from 8am to 4pm.

“After they collect their nomination papers they will fill them and submit back to us so that we can clear the candidates who are going to run for the election,” the Commissioner said.

She said that electronic transmission of results would be done for the three executive seats of the Chairperson, Treasurer and Secretary General direct to the tallying centre through mobile phones.

The University’s Dean of Students, Fr Dominic Wamugunda said the institution would cater for all the costs which were yet to be ascertained.

“You know we have had a few challenges in the past but this time we decided that we want to start a new era,” he said.
