Three dead in south Yemen bomb blasts

ADEN, Oct 12 – Three people were killed and 14, including two policemen, were wounded in twin bomb blasts at a sports centre in Yemen\’s port city of Aden, medical officials said Tuesday, updating an earlier toll.

In total, 17 people wounded in Monday night\’s explosions were admitted to Al-Jumhuriyya and Al-Naqib hospitals in Aden and three of them died of their wounds, the officials told AFP.

Seven people, including 10-year-old Abdulrahman Tarek, were in serious condition, they said.

Security and medical officials had in the immediate aftermath of the blasts given a preliminary toll of one dead and eight wounded.

The explosions came within around 10 minutes of each other in a residential district of the south Yemen city, which is to host part of the 20th Gulf Football Championship due to kick off next month.

Residents said the blasts were heard more than a kilometre (half a mile) away.

"Two bombs exploded… at Al-Wahda club in Sheikh Othman," a security force official told AFP on condition of anonymity, referring to a busy district of the city.

The attack was the second in as many days in Aden, where assailants fired a rocket-propelled grenade at a police patrol on Sunday, a police official said, adding that one person was wounded.

The football competition involving Yemen, Iraq and six Gulf Cooperation Council countries is to be held from November 22 to December 5 in Aden and neighbouring Abyan province, which has seen an increasing number of attacks by the local arm of Al-Qaeda.
