Six foreigners freed in Cameroon after kidnap

YAOUNDE, Oct 1 – Six foreigners abducted in Cameroon a little over two weeks ago were freed on Thursday by the country\’s defence forces, a government spokesman said.

"They were freed (September) 30 at 1500 local time (1400 GMT) in Cameroonian territory in defence and security forces," said spokesman and Communication Minister Issa Tchiroma Bakary.

The freed hostages — a Croatian, a Philippino and four Ukrainians — were to be handed over to diplomats from their respective countries on Friday, he added.

They were abducted in the night from September 12 to 13 during an attack on three vessels moored off of the port city and main business centre Douala, according to a source close to investigators.

The kidnapping was claimed by a group of little-known armed rebels Africa Marine Commando.
