German tanker seized by pirates

ATHENS, Oct 24 – A German-skippered tanker with a crew of 17 has been seized by pirates off the coast of Kenya, the Greek coastguard said on Sunday.

The Singapore-flagged ship York, with a cargo of 150 tonnes liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), was seized some 93 nautical miles east of the Kenyan coast on Saturday, a Greek coastguard spokeswoman told AFP.

The tanker, owned by Interunity Management Corporation in Athens, was headed from Kenya to the Seychelles, she said.

"The authorities of Singapore are handling the case as they are the flag state and there are no Greeks on board," the spokeswoman said.

No information was immediately available on the condition of the crew, consisting of a German skipper, two Ukrainians and fourteen Filipinos.
