Sixteen killed, 63 hurt in Sudan bus crash

KHARTOUM, Sep 22 – Sixteen people were killed and 63 injured when two buses collided in north Sudan, the police spokesman for Northern Kordofan state said on Wednesday.

"One bus coming from the south tried to overtake a truck, but it hit a bus that was travelling in the other direction," said Bashar Mohammed Taeir.

"Sixteen people were killed in the crash and 63 others were injured."

The accident on Wednesday morning happened near the settlement of Amrhad, some 100 kilometers (60 miles) east of Northern Kordofan\’s state capital El Obeid.

Last week 37 people were killed and 26 injured in Sudan\’s White Nile state when two buses collided in similar circumstances, when one smashed into another as it overtook a truck.

The following day 13 people travelling to mourn victims of the bus crash drowned when their boat capsized in Sudan\’s White Nile river.
