NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 13 – President Mwai Kibaki on Monday met and held talks with the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) who paid him a courtesy call.
During the discussions, the (CPA) Executive Committee thanked the President and the Kenya government for hosting the 56th CPA Conference which opens formally at Kenyatta International Conference Centre tomorrow.
President Kibaki will tomorrow open the Conference at the KICC at 10.30 a.m.
The Committee, led by Kenya ’s House Speaker Kenneth Marende also congratulated President Kibaki, the coalition government and the people of Kenya for settling the constitution review debate amicably.
The officials commended the leadership of President Kibaki in propelling the country to the new second republic through the newly promulgated constitution.
Through entrenchment of a new constitution, the CPA Executive Committee observed, Kenya has shown the way and led by example in widening the democratic space in the country.
The CPA executive committee, on behalf of the over 900 delegates attending the conference, at the same time, appreciated the hospitality of the Kenyan people extended to them since their arrival in the country and paid tribute to President Kibaki’s able leadership in bringing the desired reforms in the country.
In response, President Kibaki welcomed the decision of CPA in holding their 56th conference in Kenya and assured of the necessary government support to ensure success.
The President urged the participants to share knowledge among one another so as to expand their information bases for the benefit of their country’s parliaments and people.
This is the second time that Kenya is hosting the 10-day event which mainly focuses on sustainable development of their members and how best to serve their interests.
The forum theme is “Parliament and Development in the 21st Century thus Far and Beyond".
The talks were attended by Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary Thuita Mwangi among other senior government officials.
