MWEA, Kenya, Sep 11 – The Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka has assured Kenyans that Parliament will play its critical role of helping the country achieve a new Constitution and usher in the Second Republic by facilitating the implementation of the new law through debate and passage of the requisite legislation.
Mr Musyoka said he was optimistic that MPs will put aside their differences and ensure the implementation of the new constitution through debate and passage of the requisite legislation.
"As leader of Government Business, I want to assure Kenyans that legislators are committed to matters pertaining to the implementation of the new Constitution irrespective of how they voted during the last referendum
exercise,’’ said Mr Musyoka.
"I am sure such issues will be debated soberly by MPs once such issues are brought into the Tenth Parliament so that Kenyans should not feel we were not serious in the first place," he added.
Speaking when he presided over the Mwea Classic Marathon, 2nd Edition’s prize giving and closing ceremony held at Mwea Boys Secondary School, Mr Musyoka urged the legislators to put aside their political differences and work together in ensuring the implementation of the new constitution.
Present were local MP Peter Gitau, Limuru MP Peter Mwati as well as nominated MP Mohammed Affey.
The Vice President said leaders should take a common stand in solving the issues affecting judges, the provincial administration among other government departments as far as the new constitution is concerned and stop being suspicious of each other while handling such matters.
"We will make sure we solve issues affecting the judges and the provincial administration amicably and move forward as one people, one nation,’’ said Mr Musyoka.
The Vice president at the same time said the Government recognizes the vital role played by the youth in transforming the country.
"We see in youth a lot of promise, energy and creativity. I am happy to note that Mwea people have also recognized this potential and gone step further to use this event to commence the process of youth empowerment through distribution of books to schools, mentorship and coaching, leadership training and counseling,’’ he said.
He said beyond the obvious health and physical benefits, sports generally imbue in us the spirit of team work.
"Sports teach us how to get along with others and how to work together for a common goal,’’ said Mr Musyoka.
He said it was about trust and responsibility and about dealing with success and failure, adding that sports help people to cope with pressure and the need to stick to training discipline in order to improve performance.
Mr Musyoka said that sports also bring benefits to communities through improved health and education, rehabilitation, crime prevention and gender equality.
He assured residents of Mwea that everything possible is being done to improve the prices of rice as the only way to boost their morale.
He congratulated the organizers of the event among them the patron of the Mwea Classic Marathon organizing committee Mr. Michael Waweru for their efforts to ensuring that the youths through the programme improved their living standards.
He promised that the Kalonzo Musyoka Foundation will be part of the event come next year.
Mr Affey dismissed claims that the provincial administration will be scrapped according to the new law, saying it will only be structured to accommodate the current administrators.
Mr Mwati on the other hand said it is only through sporting activities that the youth can improve their living standards.
