Kenya Broadcasting Corp MD sacked

NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 6 – Suspended Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) Managing Director David Waweru has been sacked.

Mr Waweru was dismissed alongside the corporation\’s Secretary Hezekiel Oira, according to a statement issued by the KBC board on Monday.

"The two have been sacked pursuant to section 24 (a) of the Employment Contract for the Managing Director and Section 15 (ii) of the KBC Code of Regulations,"  the statement by the board\’s chairman Charles Muoki said.

Both Mr Waweru and Mr Oira were suspended in June this year following allegations of impropriety involving a contract to broadcast the FIFA World Cup 2010 matches live from South Africa.

In suspending the two, the board said it was necessary for the move to pave way for far reaching investigations including a forensic audit of the controversial contract.

The Inspector General of State corporations and the Kenya Anti Corruption Commission were invited to launch investigations into allegations of official sleaze in the corporation.

KBC\’s Editor-In-Chief Waithaka Waihenya will continue to serve as Managing Director in an acting capacity.

The statement issued said that Finance and Administration Manager Musa Muthambi would continue to oversee the duties of the corporation secretary.

Mr Waweru joined KBC in 2006 and his contract was extended in August last year for another term of three years.
