SWAZILAND, Sep 1 – Evelyn Wanjiru Njoroge of Capital FM did Kenya proud when she scooped the radio category prize in the 2009 COMESA Media Awards.
The award ceremony was held on the sidelines of the the 14th COMESA summit of Heads of State and Government which opened on Tuesday at Ezulwini in Swaziland.
This is the second time that Evelyn, who is the Business Editor at Capital FM has won a COMESA business reporting award.
"I feel honoured to receive this award and I dedicate it to my country which is still celebrating the promulgation of a new constitution," Ms Njoroge said after receiving the award.
President Mwai Kibaki who was among leaders who attended the COMESA summit congratulated Ms Njoroge for scooping the award.
The 1st winners were awarded at the historical COMESA Summit that launched the Customs Union on June 7, 2009 following the decision of the COMESA Authority in Djibouti in November 2006, to carry out a competition for the COMESA Media Award with the view to interest the media in the region on regional integration and economic reporting.
The adjudication was carried out by University media academicians from Rhodes University South Africa.
The annual awards are open to journalists who are COMESA nationals and who report on COMESA activities in the field of print, radios and television.
Articles in English or French with a minimum of 1,000 and maximum of 3,000 words, were be submitted as published/broadcast, in the form of the newspaper/magazine cuttings, audio or video cassettes.
The competition is open to individuals not media institutions or organizations.
Addressing the summit, President Kibaki appealed to the international community to appreciate the delicate situation of Sudan and act proactively instead of isolating the people of Sudan.
He emphasised that the people of Sudan should be encouraged to play their rightful role in the community of nations.
"It is my wish that the international community would appreciate the delicate situation of Sudan and act proactively. We should not isolate the people of Sudan," President Kibaki said.
Noting that the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) is at a critical stage, the President also called on all COMESA member states to support and encourage the people of Sudan to resolve the outstanding issues in the CPA amicably as they prepare to hold a referendum in January next year.
Said the President: "A number of important milestones including the issues of border demarcation, among others have not yet been addressed."
The Head of State, however, applauded the Sudan leaders for agreeing to work together for a peaceful and prosperous country, saying so far positive achievements have been realized, most notably being the recent general elections.
