Deputy Kenyan PM campaigns for Ndolo

NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 21 – Campaigns for the Makadara parliamentary by-election have kicked into high gear with Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi drumming up support for ODM candidate Reuben Ndolo.

Mr Mudavadi, who is also an ODM deputy leader, on Saturday called on party supporters to rally behind one candidate and not repeat past mistakes.

“Although Ndolo went to the courts, if we were united from the beginning, he would not have had to go to court,” he said, in reference to Mr Ndolo’s successful election petition against Dick Wathika.

The High Court nullified Mr Wathika\’s election and the by-election was later set for September 20.

“We all need to be united. 66,000 people voted (in this constituency) during the referendum, please let us not be ashamed to vote during this by-election,” Mr Mudavadi rallied.

Also present at the rally was nominated MP Rachel Shebesh

“You cannot make it alone since Nairobi has a lot of people and everyone has to have his own space. We cannot move forward unless all in ODM become one in our aspirations,” she stated.

Speaking at the same venue, Dagoretti political aspirant John Kiarie described Mr Ndolo as a man of integrity.

“We do not see hon Ndolo just as an MP in Makadara; We see him as a national leader. If I am in Dagoretti and I have a problem, I can easily approach Ndolo to help me solve it,” he said.

Lady Justice Kalpana Rawal nullified Mr Wathika’s election on grounds that the electoral process was marred by irregularities.

She said the election was not free and fair and that the Returning Officer abdicated her responsibility.

Former MP Reuben Ndolo, who cited numerous irregularities in the 2007 elections, filed the petition that nullified Wathika’s election.

Through his lawyer Otiende Amolo, the petitioner had asked the judge to nullify the election alleging officials of the now defunct Electoral Commission of Kenya colluded to rig the polls by orchestrating his arrest on December 28, 2007.
