Kibaki takes Yes campaign to Nyandarua

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 21 – President Mwai Kibaki is on Thursday expected to tour the larger Nyandarua district in a bid to woo area residents to vote for the Proposed Constitution during the August 4 referendum.

The tour comes three days after the President met Members of Parliament (MPs) from the region at his Harambee House office to strategies ahead of the tour.

“The President’s tour is primarily meant to campaign for the new Constitution though we are aware that there are issues of development that we would wish the President to address,’ said Ndaragwa MP Jeremiah Kioni.

President Kibaki is expected to address residents at Ndaragwa, Nyahururu and Ol-Kalou towns.

Speaking to Capital News, Mr Kioni said preparations for the tour were in top gear and urged residents to turn up in large numbers to welcome the President.

“Top on the agenda of the Head of State visit is to solidify the “Yes” vote from this area, which has predominantly been one of his strongholds in Central Province,” he said.

However, leaders from Ol-Kalou are expected to present a memorandum to the President urging him to ensure all Internally Displaced Person’s (IDPs) are immediately resettled.

Ol-Kalou is currently hosting over 48,000 IDPs who were ejected from their homes at the height of post election violence in 2008.

IDPs from Mawingu camp in Ol-Kalou division of Nyandarua Central district last week staged a peaceful protest march to the local DC’s office protesting against the government’s delay in resettling them.

Other issues in the list include matters involving agriculture and infrastructure in the area.

Meanwhile, retired President Daniel Arap Moi is also expected to take his No campaign to Laikipia West this weekend.

President Moi is set to address a meeting in various trading centre in the area to urge Kenyans to reject the Proposed Constitution.
