Kenyans to vote in Sep 20 Juja poll

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 23 – Juja residents will go to the polls to elect a new Member of Parliament on September 20.

The chairman of the Interim Independent Electoral Commission (IIEC) Issack Hassan announced on Friday that party nominations would take place on August 27 and 28.

George Thuo lost the parliamentary seat in April following an election petition filed by the 2007 loser William Kabogo.

In his ruling, Justice Luka Kimaru blamed the defunct Electoral Commission of Kenya’s returning officer for abdicating his statutory duties when he failed to ensure that the candidates signed forms 16A and 17A.

He ruled that a by-election be held and asked the Interim Independent Electoral Commission (IIEC) to ensure a free and fair exercise.

The IIEC has already conducted successful by-elections in Shinyalu, Bomachoge, South Mugirango and Matuga constituencies in which three previous lawmakers lost.  Only Chirau Ali Mwakwere managed to recapture his Matuga seat.

On Friday, the IIEC also announced dates for by-elections in various civic authorities across the country.

The Wajir South constituency election was also nullified last week after a petition filed against Abdirahman Ali Hassan.

The IIEC is currently preparing to conduct the referendum on the proposed Constitution on August 4.
