Kenyan President takes Yes drive to Eldoret

ELDORET, Kenya, Jul 16 – President Mwai Kibaki took the constitution campaigns to the No strongholds on Friday, where he told a rally in Eldoret that the proposed law will unite Kenyans and effectively address the country’s development needs.

The President said the proposed Constitution is the best the country has ever had as it is was written by Kenyan experts who collected views from wananchi thus making it a product of a fully Kenyan-driven process.

“Even those who are opposing it know that it is a good constitution. That is why I appeal to Kenyans to vote for it during the referendum,” President Kibaki said.

He once again, appealed to wananchi to live together peacefully and not to hate those holding opposing views regarding the new constitution.

He emphasised that Kenyans should remain one people and not to live in fear, expressing optimism that the proposed Constitution will pass and usher in a new dawn of opportunities for wananchi.

Speaking during the meeting, Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka commended President Kibaki for putting aside self interest to support the proposed Constitution in the spirit of true statesmanship for the benefit of the country.

The Vice President noted that by leading the reform agenda from the front, the President wants to leave a legacy of a better country that is united.

In this connection, Mr Kalonzo appealed to wananchi to demonstrate their patriotism by supporting the new constitution.

On church-state relations, the Vice President assured that the church will not lose its dignity and mandate when the proposed Constitution is passed by Kenyans.

On his part, Industrialisation Minister Henry Kosgey said Kenyans should support the new constitution because it will ensure justice and equitable distribution of resources in the country.

The Industrialisation Minister said as a leader from the Rift Valley, he would not be supporting the constitution if he knew it would hurt the region.

“If you read the Constitution yourself, you will agree with me that the document favours all Kenyans,” Mr Kosgey said.

Agriculture Minister Dr Sally Kosgei urged wananchi not to allow themselves to be fed with lies by those opposing the proposed Constitution, saying politicians leading the “No” camp do not have the interest of Kenyans at heart.

Speaking during the meeting the leaders, who included Members of Parliament and civic leaders, drawn from nine districts of the North Rift said they supported the new constitution because they had read and understood that it is good for the country.

The meeting was also attended by Cabinet Ministers Prof Hellen Sambili, Prof Anyang’ Nyong’o, Franklin Bett, Esther Murugi and Fred Gumo, Assistant Ministers and several legislators from various parts of the country.
