3 Kenyan MPs formally join No camp

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 7 – Three Members of Parliament who were leading a bid to suspend the referendum and seek consensus on the contentious clauses have now joined the No camp after their efforts hit a snag.

Kigumo MP Jamleck Kamau, who had sponsored the Constitution of Kenya Amendment Bill (2010) complained that the House Business Committee had frustrated their efforts by failing to allocate time for their Bill.

"Despite the decline, we have established that there is no business for the House and the HBC has recommended adjournment," he said in anticipation that MPs would take a break from Wednesday to August 10.  However, the adjournment Motion is now expected on Thursday.

Mr Kamau\’s Bill was seeking to suspend the August 4 referendum and instead refer the contentious issues to a reference group for reconciliation.

Peter Mwathi (Limuru) and MP George Nyamweya (Nominated) joined Mr Kamau and said they would "mobilise Kenyans to reject the document as it is until such time when we will all be able to agree on how to move together as a united country."

"We have been going round and people have been asking why we have failed to sit down and agree on the contentious issues. That is what we were doing," said Mr Nyamweya.

The three were joined by Imenti North MP Silas Ruteere who has already proclaimed he is opposing the Constitution "over the unequal boundaries of counties."

Mr Kamau said the team shall demonstrate their strength at a rally on Sunday in his Kigumo backyard. He indicated that even though he was now opposing the proposed Constitution, he would not team up with Higher Education Minister William Ruto\’s No camp.

He claimed there are many legislators currently in the Yes camp who are secretly supporting the No camp.

"People should stop saying Yes in the day and No at night," he said.

Mr Mwathi added: "This can be explained by the many people who sent contributions to the No camp fundraiser last week."

Mr Nyamweya said the 47 counties as proposed in the document create wide inequalities.

"How do I go to tell my people this document is good while it discriminates them?"

The No camp is strongly opposed to provisions on the Land chapter, county boundaries and the inclusion of Kadhis courts.
