Kenya torture victims awarded Sh40m

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 21 – The High Court has awarded 21 victims of the infamous Nyayo torture chambers Sh40 million as compensation for illegal detention.

High Court judge Hannhah Okwengu on Wednesday directed the State to pay the victims the said amount saying their claims for torture, false imprisonment and malicious prosecution were justified.

The plaintiffs through lawyer Gitau Mwara, who is also a victim, sought to be compensated for their alleged incarceration by the Kanu regime without trial between 1986 and 1987.

Early last year, Justice Roselyn Wendo awarded seven people who had raised similar complaints Sh1.5 million each.

The victims moved to court seeking to be compensated for the "inhumanity" they claim to have been subjected to during the rule of Daniel arap Moi.

There are 24 pending cases by detention and torture victims seeking justice.
