AU condemns Uganda blasts

ADDIS ABABA, Jul 12 – Twin bomb blasts that killed at least 64 in the Ugandan capital Kampala overnight are a terrorist act that should be condemned in the "strongest possible terms", the African Union said on Monday.

"It\’s a terrorist act, it must be condemned in the strongest possible terms," AU Commissioner for Peace and Security Ramtane Lamamra told AFP by phone from the Seychelles, where he is attending a conference on Somali piracy.

Explosions ripped through crowds gathered around two Kampala restaurants last night to watch the football World Cup final, killing at least 64 and wounding as many, according to Ugandan police.

The blasts were the worst such attack to hit the region in years and came a week before the start in the Ugandan capital of the AU\’s annual heads of state summit.

No group claimed responsibility for the carnage but Uganda pointed a finger at the Al Qaeda-inspired Shebab insurgents in Somalia, where it has thousands of troops deployed as part of an AU mission.

The Shebab\’s top leader had called for an all-out jihad (holy war) earlier this month against countries contributing to the AU force in Somalia and protecting the Western-backed government there.

"We condemn this act that was directed at an African country that is active in promoting the goals of the African Union," Lamamra said. "The attacks prove that terrorists can hit anywhere, including Africa."
