Woman held over Kenya slum killing

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 23 – Police are holding a woman who allegedly killed her co-wife at Nairobi’s Kibera slum on Tuesday night.

The suspect, in her mid-thirties, reportedly stabbed the other woman in the chest after a quarrel at the Lindi area of the slum, according to police.

“She is now in our custody and will face murder charges in court once an investigation into the matter is completed,” Mr Antony Kibuchi, the Nairobi Provincial Police Chief said.

“There is sufficient evidence linking her to this murder but our officers are still compiling more evidence,” he told Capital News in an interview at his office at the Nairobi Area Police headquarters.

He said the woman was arrested as she attempted to escape from the house where the killing occurred.

Another police officer at the Kilimani police station where the woman was being held said they recovered a sword from the scene.

He said they were investigating reports that the victim was stabbed after a quarrel.

“We have been told there has been a long-standing dispute between the two women and this might have contributed to what happened last night [Tuesday],” the officer who cannot be named because he is not allowed to discuss an ongoing investigation said.

In a separate incident, a man was burnt to death after his house caught fire in Easteligh Section I.

Police said nothing was salvaged from the house when the fire broke out at about 10pm. The man is reported to have been living alone.

“An initial investigation has revealed the fire was caused by a stove that exploded in the house,” Mr Kibuchi said.

Police said they were increasingly concerned at the high rate of fire incidents mainly in the city’s slums.

In recent weeks, fires have occurred at the Mathare, Kibera and Kiamumbi slums – destroying property of unknown value and rendering thousands homeless.

Six people have been killed in similar fire incidents since April, according to police.
