Meru sex pest jailed for 30 years

MERU, Kenya, June 3 – A man who defiled his niece while she slept in the same bed as his wife, has been jailed for 30 years by a Meru court.

40-year-old Johana Mutwiri was convicted by Senior Principal Magistrate Kiarie Waweru Kiarie when he pleaded guilty to defiling his niece at his Kiirua home in Buuri district.

Inspector Joseph Bahati, prosecuting, said the class-two pupil had visited her auntie during the last holiday after closing school on April 28 this year.

It is while the sex pest, his wife and the girl were sleeping in the same bed at night that he turned to her and undressed her and started defiling her.

Inspector Bahati told the hushed court how the complainant started crying awakening Mr Mutwiri’s wife.

However, the wife did not report the matter to the police but only reprimanded her husband over the behaviour and they went back to sleep.

The prosecutor said the matter was only reported four days later after the girl narrated the ordeal to her mother when she came for her in preparation for the next school term.

The mother reported the matter to Kiirua police station, after taking the daughter to Meru District Hospital where it was proved she had indeed been defiled.

Mr Mutwiri baffled the court when he told Mr Waweru that the facts of the case were true.

He pleaded for leniency saying he had three children and his parents were deceased.

The prosecutor described the suspect as a first offender, but the magistrate said the offence was too serious and required a life sentence but because he had pleaded guilty to it he would just give him 30 years in jail.

Mr Waweru wondered whether the suspect, who claimed that his parents were dead was using the reason to sexually abuse his own niece.

Elsewhere in Laikipia district, shock gripped Marmanet village after a woman was raped and her body dumped in a thicket.

Residents found the body of Mary Wanjiku, 25, lying with blood oozing from her private parts on Thursday morning.

Area police boss Paul Kariuki said that the woman was repeatedly raped and then strangled to death. Initial investigations showed that the offence had occurred during the morning hours as the body was still fresh.

Mr Kariuki said that police had launched investigations into the matter adding that the deceased body was moved to Nyahururu district hospital mortuary.

The incident occurred barely three days after another woman was raped and killed within the estates of Nyahururu town.

Her 9-month-old baby was later dumped by her side.

Elsewhere, police in Nyandarua have launched a search for a gang that killed a middle aged man at Milangine trading centre.

The deceased was walking home on Wednesday evening when he was accosted by the armed gangster who shot him dead.

Nyandarua OCPD Jasper Ombati said that the gang was believed to be behind a series of robbery incidents in the area.

It is believed that this was a revenge mission since one of the gang’s accomplices had been lynched by a mob last month.
